Co-captains announced for Boomers 2019/20 Season!

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are excited to share that this 2019/20 WNBL Season we will be led by co-captains… drum roll please… 

Maddie Garrick and Cayla George! 

The Boomers are thrilled to have these two athletes leading together. The pair are not only teammates, but also great friends, and work well as a pair both on the court and off.

Both Maddie and Cayla are well accomplished in their basketball careers and we look forward to the experience and leadership that they will bring to the young playing group. 

Garrick has been playing in the WNBL since 2009 and has been with the Boomers since 2015. She’s been a part of the Australian Opals, taking out the silver medal in the 2017 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, but more recently has been a superstar for Australia in the 3×3, winning gold in the FIBA Women’s World Series last week in Japan. 

George has been playing within the WNBL since 2005 and joined the Boomers in 2018. She has a wealth of international experience, playing in the WNBA for Phoenix and Dallas as well as playing in France and Hungary. George is a current member of the Australian Opals team and won gold in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast. George has also won bronze (2014) and silver (2018) in FIBA World Championships.

This dynamic duo bring a whole lot of star power, skill and energy to the Boomers. But more importantly they bring a motivation and determination to bring out the best version of the team for the upcoming WNBL season. 

Both players speak incredibly highly of each other, with Garrick openly sharing her beliefs on George in a captaincy role: “She’s a great leader, she really brings everyone together”. 

When asked about the plans for this season, George highlighted the importance of the team’s processes, but also shared her thoughts on the importance of a positive culture. “When everyone is in a good headspace and having fun that that’s when we’re playing our best basketball.” With their high spirits and contagious laughter, it’s easy to see how the pair will keep this a focus throughout the season.

We’re excited to see what Maddie and Cayla will bring to the team with their co-captaincy, and look forward to seeing them lead the way this 2019/20 WNBL Season.
