Holiday Here This Year

February 12, 2020 | Melbourne Boomers news

In the lead up to our WNBL20 Finals Campaign, we took advantage of the FIBA break and headed to East Gippsland for a couple of days to visit some of the bushfire affected areas. After our fundraising efforts in Round 13 saw us raise over $18,000, as a Club we were keen to continue our support. Throughout the two day trip we were able to spend time in many schools and communities, and put some much needed money back into the economy. It was a great trip and we were privileged to be welcomed so kindly by everyone in Gippsland.

The visit began in Bruthen, where we were met on the main street by the students from Bruthen Primary School before grabbing some snacks from the Bruthen Bakery. From here we continued on, dropping in and running some clinics at Orbost Primary, Newmerella Primary and Tambo Primary. With new t-shirts in hand, it was amazing to see all the kids dressed in purple and with huge smiles on their faces. The night consisted of mini-golf with local kids at Footbridge Mini-Golf in Lakes Entrance, and a camel ride up the beach thanks to Lakes Entrance Camel Rides.

The following morning saw us visit a couple more local primary schools in Swan Reach and Nicholson before we made our way to Sale for an open training session.

A big thank you to our partners at Latrobe Valley Authority, Crown Coaches, ANZ, Caribbean Park and Basketball Victoria for helping us make this visit happen and for your donations to the communities we visited.

Whilst we could only visit East Gippsland for a short period of time, it was important to us that we highlight the important message that Gippsland is open for business. The residents in East Gippsland have been through an extremely tough few months, and they need our support to help them get back on their feet.
