Carly Wilson back for third season as Assistant Coach

Former Capital and two-time Assistant Coach, Carly Wilson, has signed on again for the 2019-20 season.

Wilson played an impressive 18 seasons in the WNBL, the last eight of which were with the UC Capitals where she won a championship title in 2010. She first moved into a coaching position in 2017 alongside Paul Goriss.

For Wilson, to coach again this season was really a no-brainer.

“I have loved being a part of this club since 2009, having experienced some rough times along with some great successes. It is hard to envisage being in Canberra and not continuing my involvement with this great organisation.

“I still get tingles when I think about last season and that phenomenal grand final series and can’t wait to see the team back on the floor doing our thing for our loyal fans,” said Wilson.

During the WNBL off-season, Wilson received a women’s coaching scholarship from the ACT Government which took her to Phoenix, USA as an Assistant Coach during an Australian Opals camp.

“Being involved with the Opals in a coaching role was more rewarding and enjoyable that I had imagined – and I had imagined it was going to be an amazing opportunity. Sandy Brondello and the coaching staff were incredibly inclusive and welcoming which meant I was able to learn so much in a short period of time.

Wilson said the experience fuelled her fire for the upcoming WNBL season.

“We have such a talented roster this year, so many exciting players to work with and watch grow throughout the year. Team comradery was such an important part of last season’s success, I am looking forward to building that chemistry with our new group this year and seeing just how far we can go.

Wilson will coach the UC Capitals during their pre-season games against Japan’s Aisin AW Wings and the China B team while Goriss is tied up with the Opals Canberra camp.
