Marianna Tolo and Kelsey Griffin named captains for second season

Paul Goriss can’t speak highly enough of Marianna Tolo and Kelsey Griffin for their leadership during the UC Capitals eighth championship-winning season, so it is no surprise that they have been enlisted as co-captains again.

Tolo said that it’s an honour to be named co-captain especially after the success of last year.

“Hopefully we’re in for another good season under our belts with Kelsey and I at the helm trying to lead things, push things and get the same result as last year,” said Tolo.

With almost half the roster returned, Tolo said it’s nice to have some continuity going into this season.

“There’s always going to be changes but to have a solid base and core group to continue with from really helps.

The duo brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and professionalism on and off the court to the UC Capitals. As partners, they bring different skillsets which complement the group in different ways – Griffin even describes Tolo as “the yin to my yang”.

“Tolo does a great job with team chemistry and off-court keeping us organised and knowing what’s going on so I don’t have to worry about that. I think I bring game play, planning and strategy.

“Not to say that either of us can’t do the opposite but I think we both really fit each other in that sense which makes us a really good duo,” said Griffin.

Much like the 2018-19 season, Tolo will be out for Round 1 for an extra week of recovery after spending the entire offseason with a foot injury.

“I didn’t want to start off this season like we did last season, missing any game is frustrating, but I know it’s better for me and for us in the long run if I get myself right and ready for the rest of the season,” said Tolo.
