Adding a wealth of experience to the Spirit team this season is newly signed Lead Assistant Coach, Mark Alabakov.

Mark comes to the Spirit as being the longest serving assistant coach, for consecutive seasons. Beginning his first national level coaching stint in the NBL with the South Dragons in 2006-2009, before heading to the WNBL with the Townsville Flames, Melbourne Boomers and Sydney Uni Flames before joining the Spirit this season. He has also been a head coach across all other major levels of basketball in Australia, including SEABL, Big V and Basketball Victoria as a Junior State League Coach.

Alabakov had nothing but praise when asked about coming to Bendigo, saying “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the Spirit coaching staff as Lead Assistant Coach and getting to work closely with Coach York in ushering a new era in Bendigo Basketball. I’ve always held a great respect for the program, the city of Bendigo and the way the Spirit fans support the team with passion – I can’t wait to get started on-court with Tracy and the team and begin investing in our growth individually and as a group. I’m really excited about the direction of the program – we have a great blend of exceptional veteran experience, battle-tested Australian Opals and emerging young talent ready to take the next step.”

Head Coach Tracy York spoke highly of Mark, saying “We are extremely excited to have Mark on board as an Assistant Coach. He brings a wealth of experience as an Assistant Coach in NBL and WNBL programs over the last 10 years.  I have known Mark for many years and I am now looking forward to working with him for the first time and in our program.”
