Lavinia Cox receives Bendigo Spirit contract

Bendigo Spirit is thrilled to announce that Lavinia Cox has received a Development Player contract for the 24/25 Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) season.

The 18-year-old Bendigo local has been a talented Bendigo Basketball junior and standout for the Bendigo Braves in NBL1, as well as representing the Spirit at Hoops Fest; the WNBL’s pre-season tournament.

Cox – who was also recently named to the Victorian Under 20 Women’s team alongside Spirit teammate, Asha Nightingale – will suit up this weekend for the Spirit’s Round 2 home match against Geelong United.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity to Lavinia,” said Bendigo Spirit Head Coach, Kennedy Kereama. “Lavinia started with us last year as a product of the TMC3 Bendigo Spirit Academy, and her hard work has made this possible. She is an exciting prospect who we think has a big future.”

Bendigo Spirit General Manager, Dan Jackson, echoed Kereama’s enthusiasm, noting the importance of supporting local talent.

“We are very excited that Lavinia will be suiting up for the club in this weekend’s game against Geelong United,” said Jackson. “She is proof of the legitimate pathways for the young women of Bendigo, starting at ‘Biddy Ball’ with Bendigo Basketball, and now going all the way through to playing in the WNBL in her hometown.”

Cox also shared her excitement at the opportunity.

“Bendigo has always been my home, so to represent the Spirit at this level in front of a home crowd means everything to me. It was so much fun pulling on the Spirit jersey at Hoops Fest, so I’m sure a WNBL home game will be next level.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve had from my coaches, teammates, and the whole Bendigo basketball community.”

Off the back if last night’s away win in Canberra, Bendigo Spirit will take to the court at Red Energy Arena for their second home match of the season this Sunday, November 10.  The Spirit will take on Geelong United, with tip-off at 12.30pm.
