Spirit head to Ballarat for December clash against the UC Capitals

9 October 2019 | Bendigo Spirit news

The Bendigo Spirit, in conjunction with Basketball Ballarat are excited to announce that Ballarat will play host to WNBL Round 8 match up between the Bendigo Spirit and University of Canberra Capitals (UC Capitals).

Spirit’s very own, Abbey Wehrung completed her junior career as a Ballarat Rush participant. “Given I’ve played my juniors here and it’s kind of a home to me, it will be really exciting if we can get everyone out to support and promote Women in Sport at the same time.”

“Its a crossing of my pathways in a way, playing juniors here in Ballarat and then heading up to Canberra and spending four years and now this is my second season with Bendigo. It is really special and i’m really excited.”

When asked about how this game will help inspire the youth in the region, Wehrung said “The Bendigo Spirit and the Geelong Supercats in the AFL, are the only regional teams in Victoria. It’s huge to bring a game here to Ballarat, for little girls and little boys to look up to us and see that they can go through the Ballarat pathways and make it.”

CEO at Bendigo Stadium Limited (BSL) Nathan O’Neill was clear in saying “This has been evident by already playing pre-season games in Sunbury, Echuca and Traralgon. Basketball Victoria Country has 106 Associations and playing a regular WNBL season game in Ballarat is a major step forward in expanding Women’s elite sport.”

Ballarat Basketball CEO Peter Eddy was thrilled to be able to bring elite women’s basketball to Ballarat.

“Both Basketball Ballarat and the City of Ballarat, are passionate about Women In Sport, and are proud to support the ‘Active Women’s and Girls Program’ through this WNBL blockbuster game, against last year’s National Champions UC Capitals.” Eddy said.

The City of Ballarat Active Woman and Girls Program was developed to create opportunities for female participation in sport, so all women and girls are given the best opportunity to participate in the sporting environment.
