Southside Flyers Captain Bec Cole will notch up her 250th WNBL game this tonight against the Sydney Flames.
Cole, a fan favourite is averaging just under 14 points per game this season to go along with 4 assists a game to help lead the Flyers to a 7-6 record.
Cole says to achieve this after all she has been through special.
“I started at 17 with AIS as a baby and now to still be playing is amazing, the injuries I’ve overcome in my time and to now notch up 250 games is something special.”
To do so now while captaining the Flyers is not lost on Bec.
“It’s so special, I have been with the team since they became Southside, and to Captain a team with girls that I love and trust just makes it even better.”
Cole says the move to Southside (then Rangers) in 2018 brought back her love for the game.
“From not really playing well in 2017, I needed the change and it helped make me happy again and bring back my love of basketball, and then to be runner-up MVP that year was the icing on the cake to show me, yes I am the player I knew I was.”
There have been some moments that Bec says will stay with her for the rest of her life.
“To play with one of my best friends Jenna O’Hea will always be a highlight of mine, the 2020 championship with the Flyers and playing with Carly Ernst who I played with 15 years ago, when were kids, she’s like my second mum and I just love the bond we have.”
Now in her 14th WNBL season after stints with the AIS and the Boomers, Cole is in her sixth season with the Flyers and she wants that title again.
“We came so close last year and with the group, we have I know we can compete again, the hunger continues to drive me.”
Flyers owner Gerry Ryan says Cole means an incredible amount to the club.
There is a reason why she is the captain, she’s a great leader, her passion and enthusiasm and the impact she has on everyone are a testament to her.”
“What a milestone, a credit to herself, her family and the team around her.”
