Bishop Bids Farewell – Thank You, Abby.
Australian basketball star and WNBL life member Abby Bishop has announced her retirement, closing the chapter on an illustrious 19-year career.
Bishop began her journey with the Australian Institute of Sport WNBL team as a scholarship holder in 2005 and 2006. She then joined the Canberra Capitals, where she played for four seasons and contributed to three championship victories in 2007, 2009, and 2010. Throughout her remarkable 14-year WNBL career, Bishop also represented the Dandenong Rangers, Adelaide Lightning, Townsville Fire, and Southside Flyers. During her final season with Southside, she shared the court with her longtime friend and fellow Opals teammate, Lauren Jackson.
In 2015, while back with the Capitals, Bishop was named the WNBL MVP after averaging an impressive 23 points and 10.64 rebounds per game. Over her career, she played 279 WNBL games and finished ranked fourth on the league’s All-Time Rebounds list, amassing 2,356 total rebounds.
Bishop’s career extended beyond the WNBL. She played for the Seattle Storm during the 2010 WNBA season, where she was part of the championship-winning team. After a five-year return to the WNBL, she rejoined the Storm for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Bishop also competed internationally, playing multiple seasons in Europe and Asia.
As a member of the Australian Opals, Bishop proudly represented her country for several years, including at the 2012 Olympics, where the team secured a bronze medal.
Reflecting on her incredible career in her retirement announcement on social media, Bishop wrote: “The journey has been nothing short of amazing, and I’ll be forever grateful.”
Congratulations, Abby, on an extraordinary career!
