WNBL Media caught up with Australian Opal Tessa Lavey, to talk all things Tokyo and returning for both the WNBL and AFLW upcoming seasons.

Leading a fast-paced lifestyle, Lavey’s 2021 has been just that. From featuring at the Tokyo Olympics to doubling her load over the Summer- with the WNBL and AFLW coinciding for the 2022 seasons- Lavey is managing it all.

“It’s been a massive year. Life is looking very busy. I train a lot, I eat a lot and I sleep a lot and repeat that every week.” Lavey told WNBL Media.

Processing the year that’s been, Lavey admits it’s been a whirlwind few months.

“Tokyo was incredible, surreal to walk around the village and walk around with the caliber of athletes that were there, it was really nice.”

Lavey also notes that reuniting at Bendigo with Opals teammate Leilani Mitchell was something she never thought would happen.

“I can’t wait to play with Lei, Lei’s someone I thought I’d never actually get to play with because we are very similar positions but Tracys (York) has done a great job and I’m really pumped.”

A highlight for Lavey? Watching fellow Opal, Cayla George chase Argentinian basketballer, Luis Scola around for a photo or pranking Boomer Joe Ingles.

“Cayla was obsessed with Luis Scola and we eventually saw him in the village. She was this big fangirl running off to Scola getting a photo. It was pretty funny.”
