Dual Olympian and WNBL veteran announces retirement

Australian Opal and WNBL Perth Lynx Guard Katie Ebzery has called time on her playing career.  

After 304 games in the WNBL and 42 appearances in the green and gold, Ebzery, 31, announced her retirement via social media on Thursday night.  

Since making her Australian Opals debut at the 2015 FIBA Oceania Women’s Championships, where the Opals claimed Gold, Ebzery has retained her spot in the national team. The successful 2018 Commonwealth Games and FIBA World Cup campaigns, where the team achieved Gold and Silver medal status respectively, both highlights for Ebzery.  

A dual Olympian and 3x All-WNBL First Team honouree, Ebzery has used the down time post the Tokyo Olympics to reflect on her 16 year career. 

“Growing up representing your country in the sport you choose was always the biggest pinnacle for me. Playing on the international stage was always the main goal of being a basketballer and to be able to do that at a number of tournaments has been really memorable and so special,” Ezbery told Basketball Australia.  

A regular feature of the WNBL, spanning across four clubs and 15 seasons, Ebzery says there’s a lot to be grateful for.  

“A lot of games, a lot of years. I’ve been really lucky to be apart of some really great clubs over that time.” Ebzery said. 

“My experience at Sydney Uni was really great, gave me the opportunity to start incorporating studying as well, which has helped me with my transition out of basketball into teaching, that’s something I look back really fondly on. 

“My last few years at Perth have been so great too, such a welcoming environment and the city of Perth has been a beautiful place to live, so I’ve been so lucky to experience it all.”
