After eight games in the inaugural WNBL HoopsFest Tournament, the Townsville Fire have emerged victors, defeating Geelong United 78-72, and Bendigo Spirit 84-63. The Fire finished top of the table with 12 points.
Mikayla Pirina (18 points in each game) led the way for the Fire, both on the scoreboard and on the floor, controlling the game and tempo. Majella Carey (19 & 10) dominated in the paint, supported well by Jess McDowell-White (10 & 10).
In what was a great display of the next generation of WNBL talent, we saw some breakout games and some stars show that they are more than ready for season 24/25.
All eight WNBL teams participated in the Tournament, playing two games each against randomly selected opponents. Games were played at RAC Arena and Bendat Basketball Stadium, with great local crowds turning out at both venues.
The Southside Flyers finished second on 10 points after a thrilling win over Adelaide.
The point scoring system to determine the winner was as follows:
3 points awarded to the winning team;
2 points awarded to both teams if they draw;
1 point awarded to the team that wins the scoring in each quarter;
0.5 points awarded to both teams for drawn quarter.
If teams have the same number of points at the end of the tournament, then the team with the most number of iwns would be declared the winner. If multiple teams have the same number of wins then the best +/- winning record (total points for / against) would be declared the winner. Finally, if teams have the same +/- then the team with the most points for is declared the winner.
