Summary

In a thrilling matchup at Red Energy Arena, the Bendigo Spirit delivered a commanding performance, emerging victorious against the Adelaide Lightning. The spirited battle between these two teams, seated 6th and 7th on the WNBL ladder prior to the game, unfolded with intensity and skill on the court.

The game kicked off with a pass from Borlase to Turner, securing the first bucket for the Adelaide Lightning. However, the Bendigo Spirit quickly responded, with Ruth Davis showcasing her prowess in the paint. The early minutes saw both teams trading baskets, but Bendigo strategically exploited mismatches to build a 10-point lead within the opening 5 minutes. Adelaide fought back with successful three-pointers, but Samuels’ 3-point shot for Bendigo reinstated their double-digit lead. At the end of the first quarter, Bendigo led 33-15, with Abbey Wehrung leading the scoring with 8 points.

The second quarter witnessed a remarkable scoring run by the Bendigo Spirit, as bench players contributed 20 points overall in the game at 1 minute into the first quarter. Brooke Basham became the first Lightning player to reach double-digit points. Despite Tonks’ mid-range jump shot narrowing the gap, Bendigo maintained control, heading into halftime with a 51-40 lead. Abbey Wehrung continued to shine with 13 points at half-time.

Kelly Wilson’s three-point shooting ignited the third quarter, expanding Bendigo’s lead to 54-40. Adelaide capitalized on Bendigo’s turnovers, scoring ten points off them within the first three quarters. The Bendigo Spirit executed a 20-10 run during the third quarter, entering the final stretch with a comfortable 71-50 advantage. The team showcased depth with an impressive 38 bench points.

As the game reached its conclusion, Coach Kennedy Kereama introduced Sophia Locandro for her first minutes of the WNBL season. Making an immediate impact, Locandro successfully shot a three-pointer, contributing to Bendigo’s dominant performance.

Summary

In an exciting match-up against the leagues two top teams, the Townsville Fire put on quite the show, locking down the Boomers early and maintaining their lead all the way through to the buzzer. Continuing their winning streak in Wednesday nights game, the Townsville Fire are now the first team to secure a spot in this seasons WNBL Semi-Finals.

The Fire started off slow alongside the Boomers, leading the first quarter 19-10. The second quarter kick off had the Melbourne Boomers off to a flyer as they unlocked their offence in the opening minutes with back to back baskets and the Fire needing to quickly find their feet to match the Boomers energy and momentum. Taking away their momentum swings early in the quarter, the Fire fought and continued their lead, winning the second turn and ending the half 44-31.

In the final half of the game, the Boomers attempted to fight back and take control of the Fire’s game but the Fire’s energy was unmatched as they took away the Boomers offensive strengths and dominated the defensive field. Star players including Aokuso, Whitcomb and Woods delivered a strong performance and contribution to their teams win as they dominated the points leaderboard.

UC Capitals are on the rise – Breaking Perths 5 game win streak against the Capitals.
Summary

Thursday nights basketball showcased incredible energy and talent from the UC Capitals and Perth Lynx as they battled it out  at the National Convention Centre. Filled with aggression, enthusiasm and energy, the UC Capitals rallied together taking on their fourth win of the season, defeating the Lynx 81-75 in the final moments of game.

In the opening minutes of the quarter, both teams were faced with pressure and energy, as the Capitals and Lynx fought to get the first score on the board and kick off the game. Jade Melbourne hitting the first bucket of the game set up the Capitals for a strong stride, however the Lynx matched the Capitals quickly and ended the quarter with a two point lead (19-17).

Heading into the second, the Capitals hit the Lynx with aggression and locked down the paint early. Alex Sharp was a strong contributer on the offensive end scoring all around the Lynx, whilst dominating the boards ultimately helping the Capitals get their 1 point lead (37-36) going into the half.

The third quarter was actioned packed and a nail biter from the get-go. Sharp hit her career high points during this quarter and was a key player in creating the difference, alongside her team mate Jade Melbourne who controlled the game and sparked the momentum swings for the Capitals. With Amy Atwell dominating the scoreboard, the Lynx had the jump and nailed some easy baskets towards the final minutes of the quarter creating a tight three point lead (59 – 56).

Fighting neck and neck, the Capitals and Lynx fought closely as the clock slowly ticked away. Gemma Potter struck a big momentum swing in the last couple of minutes to separate themselves from the Lynx as the energy was boosted. In the crucial moments of the game, Jade Melbourne put on a push for the Capitals and challenged the Lynx with immense defensive and offensive pressure, nailing shots from all around the court and putting on a stellar performance to keep her team in the lead.

As the quarter came to a conclusion, the Capitals continued their rise as they take home the win by 6 points. Hitting her career high points, 19 rebounds for the second time this season and a double double, Alex Sharp was the clear ‘player of the game’.

Melbourne Boomers put on a show, defeating the ladder leaders Townsville Fire

Summary 

In the battle of the ladder leaders, the Melbourne Boomers have prevailed over Townsville Fire at the Melbourne Sports Centre with a score of 94-58. An anticipated match-up unfolded between the two teams on Saturday night, with Townsville coming in as the team to beat.

The Boomers started off especially hot, creating an early lead within the opening minutes. Townsville were able to remain composed, despite the Boomers sustaining this lead throughout the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Boomers once again come out strong, being able to further extend their lead. Townsville began to look shaky as the Boomers began to grow this lead further as the minutes went on, finishing the quarter with a 12 point deficit.

Boomers came out dominating in the second half, leaving the Fire scoreless for the first 5 and a half minutes of the third term. Melbourne’s strong offensive and defensive style of play was able to show cracks within the Fire’s side on the night during this third quarter. Boomers continued to surge in the final quarter, maintaining their lead with the margin continuing to grow.

Naz Hillmon had a dominant night, finishing with a double-double (24 points, 12 rebounds) earning herself player of the game.

Sydney end Perths 5-Game win streak against the Flames by 3 points

Summary

In a tight tussle and hungry for the win, the Sydney Flames rise above defeating the Perth Lynx by 3 points in the final moments of the game at Qudos Bank Arena. Ending the Perth Lynx’s 5-game winning streak against the Sydney Flames, both teams were eager to come out victorious as three’s were flying and the defense was lifted.

Opening the first quarter, Cayla George was focussed and gave the Flames the opening basket to get them on a roll. Trying to match the Flames heat, the Perth Lynx were slowly chasing behind as the Flames started to feel it early and find their momentum, Flames lead the first quarter 24-16.

The second quarter was hot as both teams continued to hustle it out, hoping for a breakaway heading into the second half. With challenging competitors including Atwell, Potter and Maley from the Lynx, the Flames were given a run for their money as Maley dominated the boards and Atwell sat closely around the paint. Despite the fight back, the Flames kept their lead but the Lynx were not letting it escape out of their reach as they finished the quarter trailing 41-45.

In an up and down affair in the third quarter, both teams brought their magic. Locking down defensively and optimising deflections, steals and fast break plays, the Sydney Flames took charge on this game. With the Lynx still trailing close behind they continued to find their momentum and keep the Flames close, as the quarter finished with the Flames leading 68-61.

The final minutes of the game were a nail biter, as the Lynx came out pumping and ready to take on this victory. Locking down the Flames defensively, the Flames momentum was slowed and the Lynx for the first time in the game took ahold of the lead by 1 point. However, with a minute to go, both teams were sitting at 80 a piece and fighting with incredible determination to break away before the siren sounds.

Fighting tooth and nail up until the final 6 seconds, the Flames took control and landed cruical points to give them the 3-point victory. Cayla George as Player of the Game, nailed down another double-double with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists.

Edge-of-Your-Seat Showdown: Bendigo Come Out Victorious!

Summary 

In a thrilling matchup between the Bendigo Spirit and the UC Capitals at Red Energy Arena, the Bendigo Spirit have come away with their 2nd win in a row.

The Capitals showcased a robust defense from the start, denying Bendigo any points in the initial possession. Jade Melbourne’s aggressive drives and fouls drew early attention. Meanwhile, Kelly Wilson and Kelsey Griffin’s collaboration resulted in remarkable offensive plays securing points from within the paint.

The Capitals managed to establish a lead, going on a run and setting the score at 7-11. A mid-quarter timeout by Bendigo’s coach, Kennedy Kereama, spurred a comeback. Post-timeout, Bendigo rallied, narrowing the gap to 17-19. However, the Capitals responded, finishing the quarter with a 22-24 lead.

Quarter two brought turnovers and missed attempts, with Griffin’s layup tying the score at 24-24. Despite facing tough defense, Jade Melbourne persisted in her aggressive drives. Mehryn Kraker’s crucial 3-point shot gave Bendigo a three-point lead, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle.

The halftime buzzer sounded with the score deadlocked at 45-45. Kelsey Griffin led with 12 points and 4 rebounds, while Alex Sharp grabbed 6 rebounds for the Capitals.

Bendigo surged in the third quarter, reaching a 7-point lead (54-47) and eventually establishing a double-digit lead. Both teams exhibited solid defense, and foul trouble began to emerge. As the third quarter concluded, Bendigo held a fifteen-point lead, with the score standing at 75-56.

UC Capitals faced a substantial deficit in the fourth quarter. Alex Fowler drew fouls and converted free throws, but Griffin’s three-point play maintained Bendigo’s 21-point lead (78-57).

In the end, Bendigo Spirit secured a significant victory, demonstrating their cohesiveness on the court.
