Written by Liam Ellison.
Deakin Melbourne Boomers guard Lindsay Allen has taken out the Round 5 Player of the Week after leading her team to two wins against Sydney Uni and Townsville.
Allen’s round began on Thursday night when the Boomers took on the winless Brydens Sydney Uni Flames.
Melbourne came into the contest without a win at home on the season but the Boomers point guard was intent on rectifying that.
She started the game by drilling two triples on her way to eight first quarter points to keep her team in touch at the first break.
It was in the second period where the Boomers’ exploded and Allen generated their offence as they dropped 30 points for the term to take control and set the tone for the rest of the game.
Allen finished with 16 points on 7-12 (58%) shooting to go along with five assists as the Boomers secured their first win at home in a 96-79 victory.
Melbourne then had to travel to Townsville on Sunday for the Grand Final re-match but Allen looked comfortable throughout as she knocked down four three-pointers for the game.
Townsville were able to keep their noses in front, leading by just three points or less at every break but to start the fourth, Allen wasted no time in asserting herself.
She hit two three’s in just over a minute of game time and went on to tally 12 points in 3:32 to turn the contest on its head.
All of a sudden with an eight-point lead, the Boomers just had to hold on down the stretch and Allen ensured they did by helping to seal the win from the free-throw line.
She finished the game with 29 points, six assists and three steals while cementing Melbourne’s place in the top four after a successful Round 5 double-header.
The Player of the Week award is a first for Allen in the WNBL while it marks the second time she has made a WNBL Team of the Week.
Lindsay Allen Round 5 Stats: 22.5 points at 65% shooting including 6-10 from three, three rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
