SEASON 21/22 ON THE HOME STRETCH

February 22, 2022 | WNBL news

After a delayed start, too many postponed/rescheduled/cancelled games to count, countless RAT tests and a Regional Victorian hub, the WNBL can announce the fixture for the remainder of the season has been locked in.

Rounds 13, 14 and 15 are set with a best of three semi and grand final series to follow from March 23.

With the announcement that the WA border is due to open on March 3, Perth Lynx is set to host their first home games since January of 2020 and reunite with the red and black army from Round 13.

Due to border closures and the impact on Perth Lynx, the WNBL made the decision to move to a 17-game home and away season, with all teams playing each other at least twice.

The Lynx will host Adelaide, the UC Capitals and Sydney throughout the final three rounds, with the Flames’ set for their first trip west since November 2019.

The final month of the season will see the race to the finals heat up, with the top four teams fighting for home-court advantage and the league’s most elite players continuing to leave their best on the floor as they play for a grand final appearance.

Round 13 will host the first official WNBL Indigenous Round, with Bendigo Spirit and Southside Flyers launching the week with Tasmanian fans in Hobart, to wrap up their two-game run down south. Celebrations will extend either side of Round 13 (across Rounds 12-15) to allow clubs the opportunity to honour the round at their home games.

The WNBL has aligned with Indigenous artist, Mara May, who has created a special piece of artwork to mark the round. Titled “the only colours we know are the colours of the game,” the story behind the piece depicts the essence of basketball and the unity of the game that brings us all together. The artwork will be exhibited across all celebratory games, digital platforms, league warm-up tee-shirts and referee uniforms.

Across the league, stories will be shared from the Indigenous voices within our game, as together we honour the traditional owners of the land on which we play.

Head of WNBL, Christy Collier-Hill is excited about what the final leg of the season will bring.

“As we’re now in the final stretch of WNBL 21-22, and with borders open around the country, we’ll see Clubs once again travelling for their remaining matches. All of this just points to some incredibly exciting and high-quality games to finish out the regular season, then into three-game series for both semis and Grand Final” Hill said.

“All games will continue to be shown on Kayo Sports, with two games a week on Kayo Freebies, and one on ABC TV – plenty of opportunities to see and get behind your team.”

The regular season will conclude on Sunday, March 20, with the top four to embark on a finals series set to take place between March 23 and April 9, 2022.
