The Podcast Snack with Tracy York

November 28, 2019 | WNBL news

Bendigo Spirit coach Tracy York has paid tribute to her bench and the spark it has provided so far in #WNBL20.

As highlighted in Bendigo’s Round 4 win over Adelaide, the Spirit conjured 37 points from its bench to the Lightning’s none.

York telling The WNBL Show new faces Demi Skinner and Shyla Heal plus returning Bendigo star Abi Wehrung have been amongst her most consistent performers to date.

“I’ve coached Shyla and Demi before, Demi’s really stepped up coming into the league a bit older and Shyla’s just a jet, she works so hard and is tough as nails so it’s been fantastic seeing what she can do. Abi is a superstar, has kind of battled injury and again got a couple of knocks on Sunday but those three have been huge sparks off the bench for us which has been fantastic,’’ she said.

“I have individual chats with the girls before the season and we’d asked Demi where she’d like to be in 5 years time and what’s her plan and she said she wanted to be a starter and I told her she needed to work on this and this.

“One week later she was starting in Round 1 because Becca Tobin was out with concussion so she showed me, ‘bugger five years, I’ll do it in a week’.

“She’s been arguably one of our most consistent scorers with Shyla and Abi actually.”

As Bendigo host Sydney this round and chase their third win of the season, consistency is a huge focus.

“Playing 4 quarters is very key for us. Not that the ladder says how the draw’s gone but we’ve had 5 of our 8 games against pretty good sides, the top 2 sides (Southside Flyers and Melbourne Boomers) and with a new group it’s taken us a bit of time and to get everyone on the floor together,’’ York said.

“Having said that we need to string together 4 quarters, we did it for 3 quarters and 4 minutes last week but didn’t finish the job off.

“We’ve got to focus now on Sydney on Friday night and know we have to work on that.”
