WNBL and Share the Dignity leading the way in the fight to end Period Poverty

Partnerships, in life and sport, are crucial to achieving goals and for Share The Dignity and the Cygnett WNBL, theirs has truly made an impact.

The national charity, which was established in 2015 to ensure anyone with a period doesn’t go without the sanitary products they need, is celebrating its 10th anniversary and its third season teaming up with Australia’s longest running elite women’s sporting league.

Beginning on January 22 2025, Round 13 of the WNBL is Fighting Period Poverty Round where donations are made at venues around the country, eye-catching Bloody Good pink socks are worn by the players and available for purchase and most importantly safe spaces are created for conversations to be had.

More than $11,460 has been raised as a result of Share the Dignity and the WNBL’s partnership since first teaming up in 2022-23 to deliver the first-ever Period Poverty Round.

Money raised, donations of sanitary items and the packing of It’s In The Bag bags, brimming with essential items, has made a difference to women and girls across Australia from major cities to regional and remote areas.

In 2023, the league and naming partner Cygnett joined forces to sponsor a Dignity Vending Machine at the Murray Bridge Library in South Australia worth $25,000. The machine is one of 996 around the country.

In the 2023-24 season, players and volunteers rolled up their sleeves and filled 300 bags with sanitary and personal items such as deodorant and toothpaste ahead of Fighting Period Poverty Round.

A team of volunteers came together in Perth during HoopsFest in Perth where bags were packed and distributed last September.

Ahead of this season’s round, another 300 bags were packed in Melbourne by representatives from Share the Dignity, Basketball Australia and Cygnett this week.

So, whether you’re attending the world-class WNBL in Townsville, Bendigo, Canberra or Sydney this round or watching the action across the screens of ESPN, 9Now or 9Go, your donation, whether it be in dollars or product, desire to learn more via socials or the useful resources on Share the Dignity’s website or starting and normalising a conversation about period poverty will go a long way to ensure that no woman or girl will go without the products and support they need.
