WNBL invites nominations for WNBL Life Membership
Life Membership of the Cygnett WNBL is a prestigious recognition, granted to those who have provided outstanding service to the league.
To be nominated and/or considered for WNBL Life Membership, individuals need to have given outstanding service to the WNBL over an extended period as a player, coach, referee, technical official, volunteer or administrator.
Basketball Australia’s Head of WNBL, Christy Collier-Hill, describes the membership as being an integral part of the basketball community in Australia.
“In the 44-year history of the WNBL there are just 82 people who have been awarded Life Membership. This incredibly illustrious group have been the trailblazers of the league, making significant contributions and paving the way for the next generation. For that reason, it’s so important that we continue to recognise these contributors, and therefore we look forward to inducting the next WNBL Life Members.”
Gaylene McKay, was introduced as the first Life Member in 1993, being the first player to play over 300 games in the WNBL. Gaylene has remained a significant part of Australian women’s basketball to date.
“The WNBL is a strong league with worldwide credibility and to be recognised with life membership is something I hold with pride and see as an honour. As a WNBL Trailblazer I’ve had continued involvement in the league since its inception to now, first as a player and then as a sports physiotherapist. To watch the development of the league has been a special journey. Every life member has made a positive contribution to the WNBL and I look forward to watching this continue well into the future.”
The candidates that have displayed the highest level of performance and competitive spirit whilst making a significant, memorable, positive, commendable, and lasting contribution to the WNBL, will be considered.

Nominations will open on 11th April and close on 30th June 2024 (AEST). Life Members will be announced at the 24/25 WNBL Season Launch.
