What is the Free Agency period?

‘Free Agency’ is a period during the off-season where unrestricted ‘free agent’ players are allowed to negotiate and sign contracts with any club.

What is a Free Agent?

A ‘Free Agent’ is a player who is not under contract to a Chemist Warehouse WNBL club at the beginning of the Free Agency period and therefore eligible to sign freely with any club or franchise.

Which players can be signed for the 2020-21 season?

With COVID-19 set to impact the finances of the league and clubs for next season, Basketball Australia and the WNBL Commission have made a number of determinations to best support the future of the league and assist the national team achieve its goal of claiming gold at the Tokyo Olympics and 2022 World Cup.

One of those decisions was to focus on showcasing the depth of local talent in 2020-21, with Restricted Players ineligible to be signed by WNBL clubs for the upcoming season.

Who is considered a restricted player?

Any individual born outside the FIBA Oceania Region that requires a valid visa to play basketball in Australia.

Who is considered an unrestricted player?

Foreign Born individuals currently living in Australia on a Permanent Residency Visa, or Refugee Visa as well as all players born within the FIBA Oceania Region.

When is the window?

Under regular competition regulations, the final Free Agency list becomes available twenty-one (21) days after the last Grand Final game and runs until the start of the 2020/21 season. Given the COVID-19 landscape, the start of the Free Agency period was delayed until 4th June 2020, 1.00PM AEST.

What does it mean?

It means that eligible players can choose to change clubs or sign on with their club once again, if offered a contract. Be sure to stay up to date with news as it develops!

Do they do this in other sports/leagues?

Absolutely! This is done in a variety of other leagues both here in Australia and right across the world e.g. NBA, WNBA, AFL, NRL. Other sports exercise different forms of Free Agency with a variety of different rules and regulations specific to that league.

How do I view my club’s 2020-21 free agency list?

Clubs will be listed here and the status of the list will be changed as clubs announce their signings!
