Free Agency FAQs

What is the Free Agency period?

‘Free Agency’ is a period during the WNBL off-season where WNBL ‘free agent’ players are able to negotiate and sign contracts with any club.

What is a Free Agent?

A ‘Free Agent’ is a player who is not under contract to their previous WNBL club at the beginning of the Free Agency period and therefore eligible to sign freely with any club.

Can Clubs sign players that didn’t play in the previous WNBL season at any time?

Yes. Free Agency only applies to those athletes who played in the WNBL the previous season.

Which players can be signed for the 2024-25 season?

Both unrestricted and restricted players will be eligible to be signed by WNBL clubs for the upcoming season.

Who is considered an unrestricted player?

Players born in the FIBA Oceania Region or Foreign Born individuals currently living in Australia on a Permanent Residency Visa, or Refugee Visa.

When is the window?

Under regular competition regulations, the final Free Agency list becomes available twenty-one (21) days after the last Grand Final game and runs until the start of the next season. Due to CBA negotiations and multiple licence transfers it was delayed, and is now commencing on Friday 14 June at 11am.

What does it mean?

It means that eligible players can choose to change clubs or sign on with their club once again, if offered a contract.

Do they do this in other sports/leagues?

Absolutely. This is done in a variety of other leagues both here in Australia and right across the world e.g. NBA, WNBA, AFL, NRL. Other sports exercise different forms of Free Agency with a variety of different rules and regulations specific to that league.

How do I view my club’s free agency list?

Clubs lists will be available on the WNBL website, and the status of the list will be changed as clubs announce their signings.

Where do I go for updates?

You can check out the live free agency tracker  and free agency updates pages on the WNBL App and website. Make sure you also follow your Club and the WNBL news and social channels.
