Deakin Melbourne Boomers Close To Finalising Roster

June 27, 2017 | Melbourne Boomers news
The Deakin Melbourne Boomers will look to finalise its 2017/18 WNBL roster in the coming days, completing a lengthy process that has been more than six months in the making. With star recruits Liz Cambage, Jenna O'Hea and Louella Tomlinson headlining the club's recruiting drive, coupled with the return of Maddie Garrick, Bec Cole, Britt Smart, Monique Conti and Bec Ott, plus the recent signing of Tall Fern, Kalani Purcell, the Boomers appear close to announcing another player. "We've been through an exhaustive process to find a player to fill our last contracted position and we think that will be finalised in the coming days," said GM, Justin Nelson. The Boomers have also previously announced the return of emerging youngsters Chelsea D'Angelo, Cassidy Gould and Emma Nankervis, while in recent days Kasey Burton has also been locked in. It's understood at least one more Development Player contract is still to be offered. "The recruiting process has been long, and we believe, very successful. The last piece of the puzzle represents an opportunity for a player who is really excited to be joining the Boomers Family," added Nelson. "Expect an announcement in the coming days." "At this stage we will also look to bring in one more Development Player as well, taking our final squad to fifteen players. No doubt, added to that, we will also get to see a few of our Melbourne Boomers Girls Academy players at a training session here and there across the season." The Boomers will also soon confirm a number of pre-season games with a view to once again taking WNBL games out to partnering associations. According to Nelson the growth of grassroots clubs and associations partnering with the Boomers has been one of the great success stories for Melbourne's WNBL team over the last couple of years. "We're really proud of the work we do with the basketball community, it is a huge focus for everyone at the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and that is most evident by the number of partnerships we are forming."
