June 22, 2017 | Melbourne Boomers news
The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are pleased to announce Rebecca Ott and Kalani Purcell have been selected for the New Zealand national team, the Tall Ferns, for the upcoming 2017 Asia Cup. Purcell is no stranger to the Tall Ferns and continues to build a very solid reputation as a fierce competitor on the world stage, however it wasn't until recently that Bec Ott discovered she had an opportunity to play for New Zealand. Kalani Purcell With a New Zealand parent, Ott was encouraged to attend camp by her Boomers coach, Guy Molloy, who is also on the coaching staff of the Tall Ferns. At camp, Ott impressed the coaches enormously and the rest, as they say, is history. "Rebecca simply fell to us by chance, but her selection was far from that as she has really worked hard and will bring yet another very talented and tall guard into our squad," said Tall Ferns head coach, Kennedy Kereama. With Bec Cole having recently represented Australia at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup, followed by Louella Tomlinson, Maddie Garrick and Jenna O'Hea all attending an Opals camp in Phoenix next week, along with Liz Cambage's undisputed position as a key player for the Opals, this year's Boomers squad has a real international level flavour about it. Dynamic guard Monique Conti is also about to represent the Gems at the U19 World Championships. "It's really exciting for the club and everyone involved, it's terrific to see our players representing their country on the international level," said Molloy, adding, "I'm really pleased today with the announcement of Bec Ott and Kalani Purcell, and I look forward to working with them and all the Tall Ferns next month at the Asia Cup."
