Boomers set sights on big double-header

January 9, 2019 | Melbourne Boomers news

While the Deakin Melbourne Boomers have locked in their finals berth for another year, they have one last double-header challenge ahead of them before the regular seasons end.

The Boomers, however, are no rookies when it comes to big double-headers, having played five double rounds already this season – including four consecutively in a row.

“Double-headers can be mentally and physically challenging, but I think we’re all used to them by now,” Boomers forward Ezi Magbegor said.

“We’ve got the right methods and strategies in place, so it’s just about preparing ourselves and taking care of our bodies the best we can.”

Last November was somewhat of a whirlwind for the Boomers with a run of four consecutive double-headers totalling eight games between November 3 and 25.

Throughout this stretch the Boomers were faced with injury challenges to Ezi Magbegor, who missed six games with a broken hand and Steph Talbot, who was absent from a huge double round due to leg soreness.

However, despite the star absences and extensive travel the Boomers were able to beat their busy double-header woes. Amazingly, the Club won six out of eight games in this stretch – which included three wins on the road.

Today, the Boomers landed in Perth ahead of their clash with the Perth Lynx tomorrow night. It is just one of the two Boomers games this round on the road before they take on Adelaide Lightning in Adelaide.

Magbegor said the short turnaround between the games makes recovery particularly important.

“As a team, we really focus on preparing our bodies for a long road trip and getting the right recovery in before and after games,” she said.

“We’ll do some light bike sessions next Monday to help our bodies recover from the weekend and then we’ll get back into normal practice from there.”
