Free Agency Update 2.0
As free agency continues, the Deakin Melbourne Boomers have added more key pieces to our playing roster puzzle for season 23-24.
Australian Opal and WNBL Champion Sara Blicavs will swap teal for purple and join us as the latest member of the Boomers. Sara is a proven winner on the court who is capable of hurting her opposition in a variety of ways – something we experienced first-hand when she poured in 41 points against the Boomers earlier this year.
Sara is a two-time WNBL Champion, as well as a bronze-medallist at last year’s FIBA Women’s World Cup. Interestingly, Sara played alongside Kristi Harrower at the Bendigo Spirit – her now-Assistant Coach at the Boomers – where they won a championship. We hope the reuniting of these two will inspire another season of success.
Our second announcement sees us bring in former-Sydney Captain, Keely Froling. Keely won a championship with the Capitals in 2019 after a career which began in the WNBL in 2011 after stints in the US college system. Keely is also highly decorated at the international level, having most recently won a bronze at the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup. Keely is currently playing for the Launceston Tornados in the NBL1 South division where she is dominating.
Our third and final announcement (for now) is a name familiar to long-time Boomers fans. Monique Conti was a Boomer from 2016, when she entered into the WNBL at the age of 16. She played for the club until 2020 before going on to win a championship, in 2020 during the WNBL hub season as a part of the Southside Flyers.
Monique is also known for her prowess with a football, having played AFLW for the Western Bulldogs before shifting over to the Richmond Tigers, where she currently plays. Monique has won four best-and-fairest awards with the Tigers, and was also recognised by her peers as the best In the league by taking out the AFL Players’ Association Most Valuable Player in 2022.
Monique has also represented Australia, winning gold at the FIBA under-17 competition in 2016. We are excited to welcome her back.
We will have more updates in the coming weeks as our team for 2023-24 continues to come together.
