GAME PREVIEW: BOOMERS AND FLYERS

December 10, 2021 | Melbourne Boomers news

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers will play their first home game in over 20-months at the Melbourne Sports Centre Parkville this Saturday, taking on their cross-town rivals, the Southside Flyers.

With incredibly talented rosters, these two teams will no doubt have the pointy end of the season in their sights, and therefore Saturday’s game should be a great contest.

Despite a strong outing from captain Cayla George (16 points, 19 rebounds, 3 assists), the Boomers season got off to a slow start on Wednesday night in Bendigo, going down to the Villawood Bendigo Spirit, 58-62.

They’ll be out for redemption on Saturday night, looking to get their first win of the WNBL 21-22 season.

Boomers will again look to George to lead the way against the Flyers, but she’ll need support and strong outings from Opals teammates Ezi Magbegor and Tess Madgen, who finished with 8 and 6 points respectively on Wednesday, and WNBA stars Lindsay Allen (4 points) and Tiffany Mitchell (12 points), if they’re to get the win over the reigning champions, the Flyers.

Despite losing Liz Cambage and Leilani Mitchell in the off-season, the Flyers recruited well, picking up Opals squad members Maddi Rocci and Kristy Wallace, as well as adding former league MVP, Abbey Bishop.

The Flyers opened their WNBL 21-22 season with a win at home against the Bendigo Spirit, 94-83, with huge games from Bec Cole (27 points), Sarah Blicavs (27 points, 11 rebounds), and Abbey Bishop (20 points, 11 rebounds).

Earlier this week the Australian Opals squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup 2022 in Sydney was named, with five Flyers announced (Cole, Blicavs, Bishop, O’Hea and Wallace), and three Boomers (George, Magbegor and Madgen).

Expect a fierce, physical and athletic game from these two teams.
