The Deakin Melbourne Boomers have been a part of the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) since 1984, making the club both the oldest WNBL club and the longest-running elite-level women’s sports team in Australia (in any sport).

Further to its participation in the WNBL, the Boomers undertake a range of community activities, as well as running a Boomers Academy. The Boomers Academy is aimed at providing opportunities for young girls and boys of all abilities to improve their basketball skills, and in turn, enjoy the game more.

Reporting to the General Manager, an opportunity exists for an Academy Manager to join the Boomers family.

This role will be charged with the overall delivery of the annual Boomers Academy Program. It will be a permanent part-time role which would approximate to 10-hours a week across the year.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations

  • Plan the annual calendar and program;
  • Secure and booking venues;
  • Coordinate and managing coaches and volunteers;
  • Market and promote events to achieve and exceed attendance targets;
  • Coordinate merchandise for attendees;
  • Manage the online booking system;
  • Manage the database of attendees;
  • Provide outstanding customer service to ensure customer satisfaction;
  • Ensuring adequate communication leading up to and post events.

Strategy

  • Contribute proactively to the overall development of the Deakin Melbourne Boomers;
  • Academy strategy through ideas and creativity based on solid market and sector knowledge;
  • Execute strategies to achieve and grow Boomers Academy program;
  • Prepare reports and metrics for measuring program success.

Financial

  • Track and report on revenue and expenditure against defined targets;
  • Financial management through input and generation of invoices through Xero.

Academy events

  • Lead and manage all elements of event operations;
  • Liaise with venue to facilitate all requirements;
  • Manage and lead staff and volunteers on the day;
  • Design and implement run sheet and other documents as required;
  • Ensure appropriate signage;
  • Develop and implement risk management procedures;
  • Lead debriefs and reports.

Business

  • Work collectively with the Club General Manager & Operations Coordinator to achieve Academy goals
  • Support the Deakin Melbourne Boomers team with projects as required.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

  • Experience in managing and delivering basketball camps and clinics;
  • Understanding of basketball structure in Victoria;
  • Coaching accreditation;
  • Experience leading a team;
  • Experience with database management and reporting, data extraction and analysis;
  • Experience in event management;
  • Experience in marketing & promoting events, specifically via web and social media;
  • Highly developed marketing, communications, and project management skills;
  • Ability to work independently, and within a team environment;
  • Ability to be self-motivated, responsive and flexible in an environment with time pressures and multiple priorities
  • Working with Children check.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a professional sports environment.
