Molloy To Lead Deakin Melbourne Boomers Through To 2020

Guy Molloy, Head Coach of the Deakin Melbourne Boomers, will stay on with the club until at least the end of the 2019/20 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season after this week signing an extension.

Molloy, two-time WNBL Coach of the Year is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Boomers, after joining the club in 2013.

Earlier this year, Molloy was also appointed Head Coach of the New Zealand Tall Ferns program, leading them to a Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and victory in the William Jones Cup in Taiwan.

The contract extension will see him retain both roles concurrently in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Undoubtedly, Molloy played a key role in leading the Boomers to the finals last season and is focused on continuing the momentum.

“Over the last few years we have proven that challenges can be surmounted. I believe this club is on the verge of even bigger success on and off the court – it’s great to lead such a talented and committed team of young athletes.”

“And you can only truly succeed when you have the support of Board and Management and I am thrilled to know we have a common vision for the club,” Molloy said.

“I would also like to thank our army of fans, members and sponsors who have remained passionate supporters and created the best home court environment in the league by far,” Molloy said.

Chairman Tony Hallam was extremely pleased to extend Molloy’s contract ahead of the 2018/19 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season.

“We have tremendous belief in Guy’s leadership of our basketball program and see him as a key foundation of our organisation. He is recognised as one of the best coaches in Australia and this extension illustrates our trust in the program he is building within our Club,” Hallam said.

Last year the Deakin Melbourne Boomers finished runners-up to Townsville Fire in the WNBL Grand Final Series. They start their 18-19 campaign at home by taking on the Bendigo Spirit on Saturday night at State Basketball Centre from 7:30 pm.

The team then travels to Geelong on Friday October 19 to take on UC Canberra Capitals.
