Record Crowd Expected For Cup Eve Derby

November 4, 2017 | Melbourne Boomers news

Backed by a record number of ticket pre-sales, Monday night’s Cup Eve Derby between the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and Dandenong Rangers is expected to set a new WNBL record crowd at the State Basketball Centre.

Now in its third year the holiday eve event has become a must-see event in the WNBL, previously setting record crowds in each of its first two seasons.

“The two biggest crowds in the WNBL last season were the two holiday eve games at SBC on Melbourne Cup eve and Australia Day eve,” explained Boomers GM Justin Nelson.

“With the change to the season this year we have unfortunately lost the January event, but there’s no doubt it has shifted the focus to the Melbourne Cup eve game.”

“The hardcore fans simply don’t miss it, while the casual supporters target this game as a chance to get along to a WNBL clash and enjoy the show on a night when the whole family is looking for some entertainment,” added Nelson.

Monday night’s game will take on some extra significance with the Michele Timms Cup up for grabs. If the Boomers win they will reclaim the cup from the Rangers, the latter having held it for the last three years.
