The Deakin Melbourne Boomers welcomes an additional $22 million for the State Basketball Centre (SBC) upgrade in the recent budget announcement from the State Government that will see elite training facilities added for female athletes.

The expansion, now totalling $130 million combined investment with Knox Council will also see new administrative offices to support basketball franchises, clubs and associations.

“We are grateful for this investment by the Andrews State Government and the belief in the vision for basketball.

“Having world class elite facilities is a great step forward if we are going to continue to develop our players,” said Deakin Melbourne Boomers, Chair Tony Hallam.

Maintaining a strong commitment to junior development, the SBC upgrade will further help aspiring young players to have opportunities and dream in becoming the next Ezi Magbegor –  a local basketballer to a WNBL star and a WNBA champion at 21!

All going to plan, procurement of the head contractor is expected by late 2020 with construction to begin in mid-2021 and completed by approximately mid-2023.
