Sami Whitcomb takes out Lynx MVP

Perth Lynx superstar Sami Whitcomb has been named Lynx MVP for the 2016/17 season, claiming the honour for the second straight season. Whitcomb was crowned at the 2017 Perth Lynx MVP Awards Night on Wednesday evening, capping a stellar season in which she broke the WNBL record for most points scored in a single season. The 28-year-old tallied an incredible total of 652 points throughout her 27 games and also knocked down 106 three-pointers – another achievement never before seen in the WNBL’s 36-year history. Whitcomb was named to the WNBL Team of the Week a league-best 13 times throughout the year. She delivered highlight after highlight, including a 41-point performance in her side’s must win Semi-Final Game Two (the most points scored in a Semi-Final in WNBL history). The adopted West Aussie finished the season with averages of 24.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game, while helping the Lynx to a 15-9 record and third position on the WNBL ladder. Her remarkable season has seen Whitcomb rewarded with a WNBA contract with the Seattle Storm. Despite her scoring prowess, Whitcomb was far from a one-way player, also taking out the Best Defensive Player award after leading the league in steals with 2.6 per game. Carley Mijovic claimed Most Improved Player, after an impressive season that saw the forward land a top 10 finish in the WNBL MVP award. Mijovic averaged 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists, all improvements over last season’s averages of 11.6 points, 3.6 boards and 0.6 assists per game. Ruth Hamblin took out the Coaches’ Award, wrapping up a fantastic season that saw the Canadian contribute both as a starter and off the bench.
