FLYERS GET THE WIN

The Flyers kick start their season with a victory in the Nations Capital.

The Flyers opened their account for the 23/24 WNBL season with a big victory over the Capitals in Canberra on Wednesday evening. Led by Maddy Rocci with 28 points and a ‘double-double’ by Mercedes Russell (20 points and 11 rebounds), the Flyers led at every change finishing with a 35-point victory (104-79).

While it was a high-scoring game, it was a physical game, with only 2-points coming from a fast-break. The Flyres relying on movement of the ball and also grabbing 26 second chance points, confirming the focus the team had on rebounding.

Carly Ernst had 14-points, including four from six from beyond the arc and Nyadiew Puoch added ten as the other two players in double figures for the game. Ten Flyers had game time against Canberra with Leilani Mitchell scoring 9-points and Jasmine Dickey adding 8-points while showing her impressive defensive skills.

The downside for the Flyers was the injury to Bec Cole in the second quarter. Bec and an opponent dived for a loose ball with the opponent accidentally landing on Bec’s back. Bec stayed on the floor for a few minutes before being helped to the bench where she was in obvious pain.  While taking no further part in the game, Bec was optimistic after the game and is hopeful of being available for the Flyers next game against the Fire in Townsville on Saturday night.
