Flyers Hit The Road For Rivalry Clash – Southside Round 2 Preview
Your Southside Flyers got their season off to a flying start at home last Saturday night and they’ll look to keep soaring higher tomorrow when they take on the Melbourne Boomers in a huge road clash at MSC Parkville.
After battling multiple times in the pre-season, each squad has now had a good look at each other’s teams, likely making this one a tightly contested battle. And that’s before you get to the game being a massive crosstown rivalry match up!
While our Flyers managed to defeat Bendigo Spirit in our season opener, the Boomers lost to Bendigo on the road on Wednesday night, going down 63-58 in a defensive battle. They struggled severely from deep as they shot just 1-19 from 3PT, getting good looks but just unable to convert on their opportunities.
Our Southside defense was strong in that season opener but the Boomers will almost certainly shoot much better in our matchup with them tomorrow night and we’ll need to be sharp & focused in front of what’s sure to be a solid crowd at the MSC Parkville stadium. Ensuring Cayla George and Ezi Magbegor aren’t allowed to control the paint will go along way to preventing the Boomers outside shooting game from hurting us, preventing post-passing and kickouts on drives.
On offense we’ll likely continue the balanced approach we had last week, with ball movement and smart passing allowing four of our starters to score 16 points or more on the night. Of particular importance will be the play of Bec Cole who continued her superb play in recent WNBL seasons last Saturday, pouring in 24 points, including 4-6 shooting from 3PT range. The Boomers may be able to offset the play of our Ranger forwards but Bec should have real opportunity on Saturday, a likely key to any Flyers victory.
