Post-Game Report December 4 V UC Capitals
In arguably one of the best team performances of the season, the Jayco Southside Flyers came away with a much-needed 89-78 win over the UC Capitals. The win moves them into 4th on the Cygnett WNBL ladder and gives them momentum heading into their next home game against the Adelaide Lightning on Friday evening.
The Flyers began the game getting off to a 7-0 run off the back of brilliant offensive efforts from Maddy Rocci, who was troubling the Capitals defenders in the keyway, and Naz Hillmon. Alice Kunek started settling into the game nicely after returning from calf soreness, adding 4-points to her tally, while Tera Reed got her eye in early hitting a triple in the start of a breakout game for her. It was shaping up to be a game of runs as the Capitals got out on their own 8-0 run to lead by 2-points at the first break.
The Capitals continued their run into the second, extending their lead to 6 points early in the quarter. Kunek, Reed, and Dallas Loughridge combined on the offensive end to keep the Flyers in touch with the Capitals who kept nudging their lead out. Reed proved to be the difference in the quarter and was instrumental in scores remaining level at the end of the first half, after converting 10-points in the quarter.
Reed was becoming un-guardable from the corner three, as she converted another one from downtown to begin the third quarter. Herself and Rocci gave the Flyers a quick 5-point lead, forcing Capitals coach Paul Goriss into a timeout to stop the momentum. The timeout proved to do the opposite as momentum stayed with the Flyers who led by 11 points with 3 minutes to play. With 90 seconds remaining the Capitals had clawed at the Flyers lead to bring it back to 5 points at the end of third.
Momentum looked to have swung to the Capitals in the fourth who took a 2-point lead early in the quarter. They didn’t hold on to the lead for long as Rocci, Kunek, and Loughridge combined on the offensive end to assist the Flyers to their third win of the Cygnett WNBL season.
