It’s finally finals time!
After 16 rounds of the regular Chemist Warehouse WNBL season and then a break in the schedule, the playoffs are here and your Jayco Southside Flyers are ready to soar.
The Flyers flocked to the top of the ladder in their maiden campaign and after securing the minor premiership take home court advantage into their semi-final series against fourth-placed Adelaide Lightning.
It all tips off on Tuesday night when the Flyers host the Lightning in Game 1.
Coach Cheryl Chambers and stars Leilani Mitchell and Sara Blicavs have returned home from France after earlier this week helping the Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals qualify for the Tokyo Olympics later this year.
Meanwhile, back at Dandenong Stadium assistant coach and WNBL legend Belinda Snell has taken the coaching reins and has the Flyers squad ready and raring to go come Tuesday.
Chambers says excitement is building and the club can’t wait to see the Flyerdome decked out in teal cheering on the home side in the series opener.
“We had a chat at training on Thursday about who’s played in finals and who hasn’t and we certainly have a mix of both. We’re really looking forward to it, especially the girls who were back here training hard during the qualifiers – they’re pumped and ready to go.
“Hopefully we can get a big crowd in, lots of support like we have had all season and get our series off to a good start.”
The Flyers defeated Adelaide twice in the home-and-away season, however the Lightning did land a big victory over Southside at Titanium Security Arena earlier this year.
“It’s going to be true finals basketball – Adelaide are gritty and determined. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a real defensive stoush. Hopefully some offence will get off and people will be able to see that but it will be defensive early on,’’ Chambers said.
Star guard Bec Cole has encouraged all Flyers fans and basketball lovers to fill the stadium and be part of an electrifying atmosphere which lifts the team.
“We’re raring to go, it’s finals time and a finals debut for the club. I just think it’s really exciting in our first season as the Jayco Southside Flyers to finish on top of the ladder and now we really want to finish the year strong,’’ she said.
“I’m ready for finals! It’s going to be incredible.”
