There will be a Game 3 – The Decider
Flyers very disappointing in dropping Game 2 of the Semi-Final Series to the Boomers.
A chance to go straight into the Grand Final series was left on the court for the Flyers who were unable to gain momentum in game 2 of the semi-final series against the Boomers on Saturday night. A tight first half, and a run during the third period were soon forgotten as the Flyers were soundly beaten by a fired up Boomers team, eventually going down by 21-points 67-88.
The Flyers started well but while outplaying their opponents early on, were unable to capitalise on the scoresheet, allowing the Boomers to remain in touch. At the end of the first period, which was all about defense and missed opportunities, it was the Boomers leading 14-12.
The second period saw more scoring with the Flyers adding 17 points to the Boomers 21 to go into the half-time break trailing by 6 points, 36-29.
While the Flyers edged to within 2-points with five minutes to play in the third period, they were never able to grab back the lead and with the Boomers enjoying multiple trips to the line, the lead was extended to double digits at the end of the third period.
The final period was more of the same for the Flyers who were unable to eat into the Boomers lead and once again watched on as the Boomers enjoyed the luxury of going to the line to shoot more free throws to ensure there would be no comeback in this game. With the margin still in double figures late in the final period, the margin became irrelevant as both teams looked ahead to a decider on Wednesday night at the same venue.
Flyers scoring was led by Lauren Jackson with 21, Mercedes Russell with 15, and Carley Ernst with 11.
A disappointing game for the Flyers, but a reminder as to why winning Game 1 in a series is so important, not matter what happens in Game 2 you are still alive. Now it is down to one game – a game 3 decider at Parkville on Wednesday at 7pm.
