2017/18 Flames Award Winners

January 18, 2018 | Sydney Flames news

The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames recently celebrated their 2017/18 WNBL season at their presentation night held at The Grandstand Function Centre.

Despite the defending Champions bowing out in the Semi-Finals this season, it was a great opportunity to recognise both the success of the team on and off the court and also the wonderful contributions from sponsors, players, coaches, staff and volunteers.

2017-18 Brydens Sydney Uni Flames Award Winners

MVP- Asia Taylor
Much to the delight of team mates and fans, US Import Asia Taylor returned to the Flames for a second season and she did not disappoint. Asia had another fantastic season earning herself a place in the WNBL All-Star Five for the second consecutive year after leading the Flames with 18.9 points per game and adding 7.7 rebounds.

Throughout the season the Flames MVP recorded five double-doubles and notched up 20+ points on eight occasions. She was named to the Team of the Week six times as well as earning the Round 11 Player of the Week.

The exciting forward was often undersized in the post throughout the season, but this did not stop her as she made up for it with power, speed and sheer determination!

Coach’s Award- Belinda Snell

Celebrating a huge milestone this year, Triple Olympian, Belinda Snell played her 300th WNBL game. The Flames captain has been a true leader both on and off the court while producing great performances, averaging 13.1 points per game, 6 rebounds per game and finished second in the league in assists, averaging 5.4 per contest.

Snell was named WNBL Player of the week in Round 8 and was named in the Team of the week three times (Round 1, Round 8, Round 10).

Coach’s Award- Katie- Rae Ebzery

Fellow Australian Opal Katie-Rae Ebzery also received a Coach’s Award for her inspired efforts this season. Following a season playing in Russia, Katie slotted right back into the Flames line-up, playing big minutes in each contest.

She averaged 13.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and finished fourth in the league in assists, with 5.1 per game. Katie was also named in the WNBL Team of the week three times (Round 3, Round 6, Round 12).

Both Katie and Belinda have been selected in the Australian Opals Squad ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held at the Gold Coast in April. Along with Coach Cheryl Chambers who is an assistant coach for the Opals, they will head over to Italy for a training camp in February. We wish them both the best of luck!

Congratulations to all of our award winners and our team as whole!
