Alice Kunek to miss remainder of 2019-20 WNBL season due to injury
Brydens Sydney Uni Flames star Alice Kunek has suffered a season-ending elbow injury.
On Sunday January 12, Kunek was injured in the final minute of the Flames game against Townsville and on Thursday, it was confirmed that she would require surgery.
Following surgery next Monday, it is expected that Kunek will be sidelined for 12-16 weeks, a rehab period that will allow Kunek time to prepare for selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics if the 3×3 team qualify in March.
“Of course, it’s incredibly disappointing to have to miss out on not only the remainder of the WNBL season but the 3×3 Olympic Qualifier in March,” said Kunek.
“We have really come together as a team over the course of the season and I’ll be cheering on my Flames teammates from the sidelines”
Kunek’s injury adds to the list of injuries for the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames including Tahlia Tupaea and Colleen Planeta who have suffered season-ending knee injuries.
Flames Head Coach Katrina Hibbert said it has been a difficult time for the Flames during this injury stint.
“Alice is such an integral part of the Flames side and she will definitely be missed on court,” said Hibbert.
“Right now, we are moving forward and are focussing on our upcoming games. Alice has been a great leader for us at both ends of the floor. It now provides a great opportunity for others to step up.”
