Flames Defeat Spirit
It was a team performance that got Brydens Sydney Uni Flames over the line against Bendigo Spirit recording a 78-68 win in their final home game of the Chemist Warehouse WNBL 2019/20 season.
The first quarter went off to a fiery start with Spirit, Tessa Lavey adding the first 2 points to the board within 10 seconds of the game. Ally Wilson responded almost immediately with a clean 3-point shot. It was made clear within minutes of the match it was not going to be smooth sailing for either side.
Outgoing Flames Captain, Sarah Graham was substituted in late in the first quarter and was welcomed by a roaring crowd who filled the stands to show their support for the veteran guard. Sarah showed pure-class scoring 11 points within 4 minutes (9 of which were 3’s).
While the ending scores in the second and third quarter showed a mere 1 or 2 point difference it was in the final quarter that the Flames really started to pull away. Britt Smart lead the way for the Flames with 22 points, followed by Sarah Graham and Jessica Kuster who managed 16 points of their own. On a defensive front Ally Wilson and Lauren Scherf were right in the mix tallying 17 rebounds in total.
In a short turnaround, Sydney hit the road today and travel south to face off against Southside Flyers tomorrow.
