Flames’ duo wrap up NBL1 season at national finals

The NBL1 season officially wrapped up for Kalani Purcell, Maddy Allen and their Souther Districts Spartans at the weekend’s national finals in Melbourne.

After qualifying as the 2022 wildcard, the Flames duo’s NBL1 North outfit took on Townsville in Friday’s opening day of action.

Despite 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block from Allen and four points, eight boards, two dimes and three swipes from Purcell, the Spartans went down 80-67 to their Queensland counterparts.

Then on Saturday, the Spartans were pitted against the Warwick at the State Basketball Centre but for the second-straight day, the Flames pair’s outfit lost, going down 88-73.

In the defeat, Allen added 13 points, four rebounds, four dimes and three steals, while Purcell contributed nine points, 10 boards, two assists and two swipes.

The Spartans finished the weekend on a high though, smashing Albury-Wodonga 109-69 in Sunday’s playoff.

Sparking that big win was Flames’ Allen (21 points, four rebounds, nine assists and two steals) and Purcell (12 points, 11 boards, eight dimes, four swipes and one block).

Allen and Purcell will now return to Sydney in the coming weeks, ahead of the start of the Flames’ WNBL23 pre-season on September 21.
