January 28, 2022 | Sydney Flames news

The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames pushed the UC Capitals in a loss in Canberra, the Caps scored 86-54 in the Flames’ second game of three in round nine.

The Capitals pushed the ball hard, with multiple lob passes early on. The Flames’ defence had a challenge from the start of the game.

Shyla Heal took on the challenge, pressuring the ball handlers and making a three to keep the Flames within reaching distance. Shyla scored nine of the Flames’ 11 points in the first quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same. Canberra played great defence while continuing to score, the Flames scrambled defensively to stay within the game, but Kelly Wilson and Brittany Sykes were dominant. Scoring nine points and six points respectively with lockdown defence.

The Capitals forced late shot clock shots consistently, making it hard for the Flames to get an open look.

The Capitals went on a three-point spree later in the game, led by Brittany Smart who finish the game with five threes.

The Flames on the second game of a three-game road trip had flat feet, it was a tough battle on either end for the Flames.

The Flames had an off night, they shot 36 per cent from the field (20-55) and had 10 more turnovers than the Capitals.

The Flames’ leading scorer was Shyla Heal with 16 points while the Capitals’ Brittany Sykes had 17.

The Flames’ next game is against the reigning champions the Southside Flyers on Sunday at Qudos Bank Arena at 12.30pm. Get your tickets here.
