Flames put out Fire

November 8, 2019 | Sydney Flames news

The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames have claimed their second win of the season against Townsville Fire, 82-73.

First quarter started off in gridlock but the Flames ended with a clear lead of 28-21. Townsville like the Flames had nothing to lose and everything to gain as they too were on the hunt for their second win of the season.

In the second quarter Townsville began to close in on the scoring margin off the back of poor defensive decisions made by the Flames. Instinctively the Flames knew their game had to lift if they wanted to stay in the lead.

It wasn’t until the third quarter that the momentum and physicality of the match began to really shift. With impact coming off the bench through the likes of Shanae Greaves the quarter ended with a one-point lead from the Flames, 55-54.

In the final quarter the Flames began to outclass Fire in both attack and defence eventually putting themselves in an unassailable lead in the moments that mattered most.

Alice Kunek top scored for Sydney with 22 points followed by Jessica Kuster with 17 points and Alex Wilson with 16 points. A special mention to Tahlia Tupea who led from the front in defence racking up 8 rebounds and Colleen Planeta claiming 6 of her own.

The Flames will return to Brydens Stadium on Friday, 22 November at 7pm for their Women in Tech round which is dedicated to celebrating trailblazing women in technology. Grab your tickets here.
