Flames star George powers Aces to WNBA title
Sydney Flames star Cayla George is now a WNBA champion after helping the Las Vegas Aces win the 2023 title on Thursday.
Leading the WNBA Finals series 2-1, the Aces headed into game four down on troops, with Chelsea Gray, Kiah Stokes and Candace Parker all unavailable due to injury.
That mattered little, as Flame George stepped into the starting lineup and put up 11 points (including three triples), four rebounds, three assists and three steals – to spark Las Vegas to a 70-69 win at the Barclays Centre.
George’s courageous 30-minute performance ensured the Aces became the first WNBA side to defend their title since Los Angeles did it in 2001-02 and just the third team to ever do it (along with Houston 1997-2000).
George will now return to Australia and join up with the Flames ahead of their season opener in Perth on November 3 – with Sydney’;s first home game on Sunday, November 12 at Qudos Bank Arena.
