Flames wrap-up pre-season with victory over Flyers

The Sydney Flames wrapped up their WNBL23 pre-season with another strong win, this time against the Southside Flyers 91-75 at the State Basketball Centre.

The 16-point victory, the Hoops Capital side’s second on the Melbourne road trip after earlier downing the Boomers, was set up by Shyla Heal and Jocelyn Willoughby – who both scored a game-high 21 points on Tuesday.

Heal rounded out her stat line with five steals, two assists and two rebounds, while import Willougby also added four boards and three steals in the triumph.

Other Flames to score in double figures were captain Keely Froling (14 points, seven rebounds and five dimes) and Tiana Mangakahia (11 points, five rebounds and three assists).

Shane Heal’s side, who actually trialled 30-25 at quarter-time before outsourcing their rivals 66-45 through the next three periods, dominated the Flyers in field goal percentage (56.1 – 41.8), free-throw percentage (70.6 – 62.5), points from turnovers (24-12) and steals (11-7).

The harbour city side will now return to the training court ahead of their season tip-off on Saturday, November 12 in Bendigo – with Sydney’s first home game against the Spirit on December 4.
