Flames look to rebound after tough start on the road
The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames came away empty-handed from their two-game road trip to Adelaide and Perth but there were plenty of positive signs to come out of a challenging first test.
Recruit Colleen Planeta was a standout performer against Adelaide Lightning, top-scoring in the game with 30 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while the experienced Alice Kunek backed her up with 16 points, six assists and three rebounds.
Unfortunately their efforts weren’t enough to overcome their opposition, with Adelaide claiming a 89-79 win.
Luck was not on the Flames’ side with Alex Wilson battling through Friday night’s game with a severe bout of tonsillitis, before being ruled out for Sunday’s clash against Perth.
Meanwhile, Brittany Smart suffered a cut to the head in Friday’s game and picked up a calf niggle. She was sent directly to Sydney for treatment.
The second part of the road trip ended in a 79-62 loss to Perth, with Kunek again leading from the front with 15 points, complemented by 11 points from both Planeta and Lauren Scherf.
The Flames will be looking to shrug off a shaky start on Saturday when they take on Southside Flyers in their first home game of the season. Both Wilson and Smart are hoping to be fit for the crucial fixture.
