George’s Opals edge Spain in Olympics warm-up fixture

The Australian Opals, headlined by Sydney Flames’ Cayla George, have claimed an important confidence-building win ahead of the Paris Olympics, defeating the world’s fourth-ranked team, Spain, in enemy territory.

A 24-14 second quarter was the catalyst in the Opals’ nine-point victory, 75-66, at the Invitational Cup in Segovia, Spain.

Alanna Smith, the daughter of former NBL player Darren, registered a double-double, with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists in the win.

Sami Whitcomb top-scored with 14 points, while Jade Melbourne had 12 on the night.

Ezi Magbegor was a force on the boards, with 10 rebounds to go with her nine points.

Preparing for a history-making fifth Olympics, Lauren Jackson scored eight points and pulled down 3 rebounds in the win, while George also had eight points – to go with two rebounds and one assist.

Megan Gustafson was the star for the Spanish team, with 18 points.
