Kings-Flames Double Header – a reminder of the glory days
(By Matt McQuade via Sydney Kings)
Sydney basketball goes back to the future on December 9 with a special double-header at Qudos Bank Arena.
The Sydney Kings tip things off at 5:00pm when they take on the Brisbane Bullets, with fans then treated to another world-class game at 3:00pm when the defending WNBL champions Sydney University Flames do battle with the Perth Lynx.
Although the Flames and the Kings combined to send out the Sydney Entertainment Centre on 13 December 2015 with the final games of basketball played at that venerable stadium, the upcoming event harkens back to the days when both teams provided outstanding entertainment at the old Kingdome on a regular basis.
The Flames came under the Kings’ umbrella in 1991, and for many years helped provide patrons with two quality games for the price of one.
Right from the start, getting early to Kings’ games to support the women became a must-do, as the Flames turned into one of the great dynasties in WNBL history.
The Flames campaign of 1993 was particularly memorable. Led by Carrie Graf and featuring legends of the women’s game including the mighty Robyn Maher, a superstar in Shelly Gorman and stalwart Karen Dalton, Sydney won 17 consecutive games in the regular season after losing their opener.
They went on to win the WNBL title by edging the Perth Breakers 65-64 in a nail-biting Grand Final at the Kingdome in front of over 5,000 screaming fans and a national television audience.
Over the next three seasons, they compiled a staggering 47-7 mark and turned players like Annie Burgess and Trish Fallon into legitimate stars.
Now a new generation of Flames is looking to continue that outstanding legacy, and they will be determined to put on a great show on the Qudos Bank Arena floor.
Led by star forward Asia Taylor, veteran gunner Belinda Snell and quality playmaker Katie-Rae Ebzery, the defending champs have gotten off to a great start this season in their quest for back to back titles.
On December 9 they’ll be pumped up to take down the Lynx and all Sydney basketball fans are encouraged to come out early and cheer these brilliant women on to victory.
It’s a massive event on the Sydney basketball calendar.
