Sydney Flames guard Tiana Mangakahia was acknowledged for her exceptional game on Saturday, by being named the WNBL’s Cygnett Player of the Round.

The Australian Opals squad member dropped 26 points, six assists and five rebounds (as well as hitting the game-winning free-throw) at John Cain Arena, during the Flames’ 68-67 win against league-leaguers Southside.

“The win on the weekend was huge, we gave it our all and we were rewarded,” Mangakahia said.

“It meant so much to all of us especially considering how the season has been going.

“We have been so close in so many games and to finally get over the line, in such a great atmosphere and historic night was one we will never forget.”

On top of that, the Syracuse alum was named in round 13 Team of the Week, alongside Townsville’s Courtney Woods (21 points and 3.5 rebounds) and Tiana Hawkins (20.5 points and nine rebounds), Canberra’s Jade Melbourne (21 points and 11 assists) and Melbourne’s Cayla George (27 points and eight rebounds).

Saturday’s performance, which improves the Hoops Capitals side to 5-12 on the campaign, highlighted how much the Queensland product has taken her game to the next level since Shelley Gorman took over as coach.

During those four games, Mangakahia is averaging 18 points, 6.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds, compared to 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, two assists through the first 13 fixtures.

“The confidence my teammates and coaches have in me has helped me thrive these past couple of games,” the 27-year-old said.

“They believe in me and trust me which helps me believe in myself.

“I’m also trying to take advantage of the opportunity Shelley has given me.”

The Flames return to the court on Sunday, February 19, where they’ll take on Melbourne at Quaycentre from 5pm AEDT – with tickets available here.
