Nicholson chases historic NBL1 East title with Sharks

After a remarkable run, which includes wins against Canberra, Albury-Wodonga (minor premiers) and Norths (reigning champions), the Sutherland Sharks are now just one win away from their first-ever NBL1 East title.

Leading the charge for the Sharks is Sutherland junior and Flames star Lauren Nicholson, who is averaging an incredible 31.17 points, 5.83 rebounds, 5.83 assists, 3.33 triples and 2.83 steals per game in 2024.

Standing in the way of Sutherland, who also features Flames #144 Vanessa Panousis, in Saturday’s grand final at Penrith is Newcastle – headlined by Flame #222 Isla Juffermans.

“Our Sharks team is full of scorers and we’re confident we can put enough points on the board,” Nicholson said.

“So [for us on Saturday] it just comes down to defence and being able to stop the firepower Newcastle have.

“They have a few players that are playing really well this season, including Isla who has been solid for them.”

Having played for the Sharks since she was nine years of age, Nicholson knows how much winning a first senior title with the club would mean to her and her teammates.

“Honestly, it [winning the championship] gives me goosebumps thinking about it,” said the Australian representative, who been lucky enough to win numerous junior titles and a Waratah League crown with her Sharks.

“I hope we win because this club is really special – it’s where I fell in love with the game of basketball.

“My teammates – including Olivia White who I’ve played with my entire career at Sutherland, the coaches, and the whole association are so deserving, so I really hope we can bring it home for them.”
