Swain pens three-year extension with Flames

The Sydney Flames are thrilled to announce that guard Shaneice Swain has signed a new three-year extension with the club.

The deal will see Swain, who took out the Hoops Capital club’s MVP award this campaign, remain in Sydney until the end of the WNBL28 season – with the final year being of mutual option.

Swain, who headed to the United States in April to join the Los Angeles Sparks for the WNBA season, is excited to extend her time in the harbour city.

“I love the club and all the people in it and honestly feel like this is the best place for me to continue to progress as a player,” said Swain, who is now the second player, alongside Emma Clarke, signed for the Flames next season.

“Guy [Molloy], Renae [Garlepp] and all the coaches are so in-depth in their developmental processes, which gives me plenty of confidence that they can all help me where I want to get to as a player.

“I love the brand of basketball we play at the Flames and feel we are on an upward trajectory as a club.

“I’m excited to be back for  the next few seasons, as we continue to build and work towards a championship.”

In year four in the WNBL, Swain’s statistics across the board jumped to career-high numbers in points (17.1 per game – the third-highest mark in the league), assists (3.8 – eighth in the WNBL) and three-pointers made (3.1 – second in the WNBL).

As such, Flames coach Guy Molloy thought extending Swain long-term was important for where this program is aiming to get to.

“First and foremost, Shaneice is a phenomenal talent,” said Molloy, whose thrilled to Swain extend her deal with the Hoops Capital club.

“I’ve been coaching in the WNBL since 1989 and there haven’t been many examples of players that have her ‘wow’ factor.

“The most exciting part is that Shaneice is only starting to scratch the surface of what she can be and it’s reassuring that she feels cooperatively, we can help her achieve her goals and fulfil that potential as a player.

“We have a plan in place of how we’re going to get there, shoring up certain parts of her game that she has the ability to improve in.”

As well as talent, Molloy knows how important continuity is in striving for long-lasting success.

“To be a perennial contender in this competition, you need continuity, which allows you to build on the foundations that we’ve built over the past two seasons,” said Molloy, who is heading into year three with the harbour city-based team.

“We had so many disruptions last season, but we overcame them together.

“Those experiences have allowed us to grow as a group, as we strive to win another championship for the city of Sydney.”
