Two of Queensland basketball’s best young prospects have signed with the Sydney Flames as amateur players for the 2022-23 WNBL season.

Indiah Bowyer and Lilly Rotunno have joined the Flames after being scouted, worked out and recruited by Flames head coach and Australian basketball great Shane Heal during a recent trip to Queensland.

The pair will follow in the footsteps of Katie Deeble and Chyra Evans, who were amateur players with the Flames last season and are now with top level US college programs.

The signings continue to demonstrate the Flames’ commitment to exposing Australia’s best young basketballers to the highest level of competition and training available.

“I went to Queensland to scout both players and worked out current college players and others looking for DP (development player) and amateur positions. Both these ladies were stand outs,” Heal said.

“I was impressed with Lilly who has had a good season with Gold Coast in the NBL1.  She is a young smart point guard that can defend and is showing great signs at the offensive end.

“Indi plays for Logan and recently was elevated to the starting line-up. A few weeks ago she made 11 threes for the top team in Queensland. She is a great athlete and I can see Indi becoming an elite defender and three-point shooter on the wing.”

Indiah is a 19-year-old Indigenous hooper hailing from Cairns. The 18-year-old Rotunno has been averaging 10 points and almost five assists a game in the NBL1 North this season.

The Sydney Flames coaching staff will now turn their attention to the Flames’ Development Player Trials which will start later this month.

Heal said the Flames had already had a terrific response but are encouraging any young, talented ballers from across the country to attend the tryouts.

“We are looking for the very best players to invest our time in,” he said.

“We are looking for players that fit our culture and young ladies we believe can become pros. We value our amateur and DP positions and are confident we can really help these players improve their games. “
